This is the place where I share EVERYTHING I know about Islamic geometric patterns: tools and supplies you need, books to read, drawing tips, painting tricks, how to look cool while avoiding a mental breakdown (oops, maybe I shouldn't have said that)...

Sometimes I sit down and wonder where am I heading with my art? Am I just drawing and painting or there is more to it?

And then I came across Mohammadhadi Ghahramanpouri’s art and mission and my head is going 🤯

I know it’s different from the type of art that I do but have you ever discovered something and wanted to share it with the world? That’s how I felt when I discovered the art of Ghalamzani.

The ancient Persian art of Ghalamzani, a highly intricate and refined metal engraving technique, has long stood as a symbol of Iran’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. This exquisite craft, found in historical artifacts, royal treasures, and contemporary decorative pieces, has been passed down through generations, carrying with it the stories, myths, and artistry of Persian civilization.

However, as industrial mass production overshadows traditional craftsmanship and the number of skilled artisans declines, Ghalamzani now faces the risk of vanishing into history.

One artist who has taken it upon himself to preserve and rejuvenate this endangered craft is Mohammadhadi Ghahramanpouri. For the past fifteen years, he has been at the forefront of reviving, refining, and safeguarding Ghalamzani, ensuring that this treasured art form does not fade into obscurity. His dedication has led not only to the creation of exceptional and distinguished metal engravings but also to the training of a new generation of artisans, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and passion to carry this tradition forward.

Yet, Ghahramanpouri’s vision extends far beyond Iran’s borders. Recognizing the universal value of this craft, he has worked tirelessly to introduce and teach Ghalamzani in the United Kingdom and beyond, blending traditional techniques with contemporary artistic expressions.

But his mission is about more than just preservation—it is about cultural revival.
Ghalamzani is not merely an ornamental technique; it is a visual language, a medium through which history, poetry, and mythology are inscribed onto metal, creating timeless pieces of art. By reintroducing this art form to new audiences worldwide, both as collectors and as aspiring craftsmen, Ghahramanpouri is ensuring that its legacy will not only endure but also evolve.

The preservation of Ghalamzani is not just an Iranian concern—it is a matter of global artistic and cultural importance. The loss of such an intricate, historical craft would mean the erasure of centuries of knowledge, skill, and creativity that have shaped not only Persian identity but also the broader history of metalwork and decorative arts. By saving Ghalamzani, we are safeguarding a unique artistic tradition that enriches the world’s cultural heritage, fostering appreciation for handcrafted excellence in an era dominated by machine production.

Ghahramanpouri’s work serves as a beacon of hope, a testament to the idea that traditional arts can not only survive but thrive in a modern world, provided they are nurtured, taught, and adapted. His relentless efforts remind us that preserving Ghalamzani is not just about protecting an ancient technique—it is about honoring a legacy, celebrating human creativity, and allowing Persian craftsmanship to continue inspiring and influencing the world of art and design.

At a time when many traditional arts are disappearing, Mohammadhadi Ghahramanpouri is proving that Ghalamzani still has a future—one that transcends borders and generations. His work is a call to action: to recognize the beauty, history, and significance of this art form before it is lost forever—to let metal breathe once more and ensure that this timeless Persian art continues to shine as a jewel in the crown of world heritage.
