This is the place where I share EVERYTHING I know about Islamic geometric patterns: tools and supplies you need, books to read, drawing tips, painting tricks, how to look cool while avoiding a mental breakdown (oops, maybe I shouldn't have said that)...

Different Types of Drawing Compass

I know you are thinking “What? There are different types of geometry compass? Who dat?”

I’m not crazy. It’s real. The different types are out there waiting for you, and they are all amazing.

Although you might think that one size fits all this is not true when it comes to compasses.

A geometry compass gives the best result for circles of a diameter up to about the size of the compass.

Let’s see know what are the types of drawing compass

6-inch spring compass.jpg

6-INCH SPRING COMPASS

This compass is the most used, and it’s the first one that everybody buys.

4 inch spring compass.jpg

3 OR 4-INCH SPRING COMPASS

It’s the smaller version of the 6-inch compass.

DROP BOW COMPASS

An alternative to the spring 4-inch compass

beam compass.jpg

BEAM COMPASS

It’s the most accurate compass, and also the most expensive one.

DIVIDER:

That is a compass with 2 steel points.

PROPORTIONAL DIVIDER

This divider is used to divide the circle into equal parts in a simple yet effective way.

Is it necessary to have all these compasses? Not really.

I would recommend buying at least one 6-inch compass, a drop-bow compass for extra-small circles and a beam compass for big circles.

If you want to know what they are used for and why, I’ve created a guide that includes everything you need to know about drawing compasses. You can download it here.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Only in Iran do we call COMPASS "pargar" and a device that has a hand that points north, south, east, and west is called COMPASS. I said it might be interesting for you. Sorry, my English is not good and I am talking to you with the help of Google Translate

Thank you very much, which Metallic Compass Mark of Precision you recommend and which Weight (gr / m2) and Block Mark is adequate.
    Thank you

    Hi,

Good informative article, how to measure the accuracy of the drawn circle

  5. […] A divider is a compass with two steel points. The divider is not used for drawing as it has no graphite point, but it’s used to mark holes on paper. You can read more about this tool in my blog post “Different Types of Drawing Compass“. […]
